My first climb...yikes!

My first climb…yikes!

adventure-time-partyMy boy is thirteen.  Thirteen!  I was just thirteen, how can this be?

For Ben’s party this year, I thought it would be a great idea to take a bunch of boys somewhere other than my house…somewhere like an indoor climbing gym? YES!  Ben loved the idea, and it went along perfectly with the Adventure Time theme he chose.  So I designed the invitations, and looked forward to not having a massive mess and sweaty boys running all around my house! Haha!

I’ve never been so happy with a cake I’ve made before.  Isn’t this Finn cake cute? Or should I say “flippin’ awesome”?? Let it be known, I’m not the best at decorating cakes, but this one was really fun and pretty simple.  Just a lot of piping and some black gel icing (leftover from Hannah’s Beatles cupcakes).  We also had green frosted cupcakes, you know, trying to make them look like Finn and Jake’s treehouse.

I really took the easy way out on this party after I discovered these free printables. All of the party decorations were downloaded and printed from this site and it saved me a ton of time, which was good because we had two days to pull this together after coming home from a family vacation. Ta-da! Everyone learned to climb, including Olivia (who turned out to be a party pooper, quite literally, but that’s another story). The party was so much fun for Ben and his friends, and it was GREAT to come home to a clean house!

My son’s 11th birthday party is approaching quickly & he believes that he absolutely must have this cake. I feel like I’m ready to give this bad boy a try but the ear part of Finn’s hat looks tricky. Any advice of tips?

Hi Amy Lynn! You can totally do it!! The ears are just a cupcake cut in half. Super easy! Just pipe that frosting on like crazy and you’re good to go.

Perla, don’t panic! You can do this! All I did was make two 9-inch round cakes, and saved a little cake batter for baking one cupcake. To make the frosting go more smoothly, make the cakes in advance and freeze them. The day of the party, make a batch of butter frosting (google if you don’t have a recipe). Keep most of the frosting white, but scoop out maybe a 1/2 cup to make skin colored frosting (a drop or two each of yellow and red food coloring). Frost one cake with with white frosting and top it with the other cake. Now spread the skin colored frosting all over the top of the cake. Now take your cupcake and cut it in half and “glue” the halves on with frosting to create the ears of Finn’s hat. Now the fun part-put all that white frosting into a piping bag and go to town making little stars all over for the hat. The final touch is Finn’s face, using a tube of black decorating gel. I hope this is helpful! Have a fun party!

        Heather,

Thank you SO MUCH for taking the time to reply!
Fingers crossed I will attempt a test run of the cake.
His Birthday is on the 7th, I’m hoping our families will celebrate it that weekend. Question!
What tip did you use to make the stars, they seem like the perfect size!
Probably a dumb question but I will ask anyway because I want to get this cake to look as good as yours!
The cupcake should be cut in half vertically or horizontally? I’m thinking vertically but would like to be certain.

Again, thank you for responding I am ever so grateful! :D

Perla, I’m sorry I’m so slow responding this time and you’ve probably already done your party! I’m not sure on the size of the tip, it was just the star one in my set of decorating tips from IKEA. Either way you cut the cupcakes should work :) I hope you had a fun party!
